Kayla Delzer of "Top Dog Teaching" explains the 21st Century Classroom

This post is very special to me! One of my favorite teacher bloggers and Instagram teachers I follow, Kayla Delzer, has written an amazing article explaining "Why the 21st Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks". This article speaks to me on so many different levels.

Over the past 4 years I have "ditched the desks" and opted for tables in my classroom. When I first asked my administration for tables 4 years ago they looked at me strangely, but obliged my request. This year, as I opened a new school I again approached administration for permission to use tables over desks. I was met again with a bit of reluctance and surprise but overall, I was given the support from my administration to use my wacky table idea. I prefer tables over desks for so many reasons.
1. Tables provide less opportunity for students to become distracted
2. Tables provide students more opportunities to collaborate
3. When students are grouped in tables they have more of a community feel rather than an independent or loner vibe

I have loved my tables the past 4 years, but now after reading Kayla's article about her own 2nd grade classroom set up I am completely blown away! One of my favorite quotes from the article is this, "If we truly want to prepare our students for the real world, we need to put them in responsive, dynamic environments that reflect life outside of a traditional classroom." What a powerful message! So, head on over to EdSurge or Kayla's blog Top Dog Teaching, to learn more about this special teacher and her student-centered classroom.
